Saint-Gobain to launch its first low-carbon stone wool production line in Spain

February 4, 2025

Saint-Gobain announces a €40 million investment to expand and decarbonize its insulation plant in Azuqueca, near Madrid, Spain.

This investment will modernize the stone wool production line and install a state-of-the-art electric furnace to replace the current one that runs on fossil fuels. The Azuqueca plant will be the Group's first facility to feature an electric stone wool production line. The new installations are expected to be operational in the first half of 2026.

This modernization will increase stone wool production capacity by approximately 40%, meeting the growing demand in the Spanish market for sustainable construction materials. At the same time, this flagship project will enable the plant to reduce its COemissions by 70% (scope 1 and 2) compared to 2017 levels.

The Azuqueca plant benefits from a zero-carbon electricity supply thanks toa Power PurchaseAgreement (PPA) signed in 2022 with ENDESA, ensuring the supply of green electricity until 2034 for a total volume of 150 GWh.

This project allows Saint-Gobain to strengthen its range of high-performance and sustainable insulation solutions to enhance occupant comfort. It is part of Saint-Gobain’s commitment to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 across scopes 1, 2, and 3.
