Re:Vision Laser & Cataract announces specialist second-opinion consultations for patients experiencing ongoing vision difficulties following cataract or laser eye surgery.
Re:Vision Laser & Cataract has announced the launch of a dedicated second-opinion service for patients experiencing persistent vision problems or unsatisfactory results following cataract or laser surgery. Led by founder Dr Trevor Gray, the service is available to patients throughout New Zealand’s North Island seeking specialist assessment and guidance on their post-surgical concerns.
Dr Gray, one of New Zealand’s longest-practising anterior segment specialists, has stepped back from performing surgery after three decades in ophthalmology. He now focuses on second-opinion consultations, teaching and mentoring, helping patients better understand their surgical outcomes and potential next steps in their care.
The new service reflects the commitment of Re:Vision Laser Surgery Clinic to improving patient care through closer collaboration between optometrists and ophthalmologists. According to Dr Gray, successful surgical outcomes depend not only on surgical techniques but also on effective assessment, preparation and coordinated post-operative care.
Having spent 20 years in the public hospital system before moving into private practice, Dr Gray has witnessed significant changes in how eye health professionals collaborate. In a recent column for NZ Optics, he highlighted the improvement in shared care, stating:
“Today, the landscape is fundamentally different and unquestionably better.”
A key focus of this approach is identifying and managing ocular surface conditions, including dry eye, before surgery. Early management can improve refractive accuracy and help reduce dissatisfaction following surgical procedures. Optometrists contribute by monitoring ocular surface health, managing post-operative concerns and referring patients for specialist assessment when necessary.
To strengthen professional collaboration, Re:Vision Laser & Cataract held a refractive surgery training day for optometrists at its Auckland clinic earlier this year. Led by Dr Gray, Re:Vision ophthalmologist Dr Mo Ziaei and charge nurse Michelle Williams, the session included hands-on demonstrations of refractive surgery techniques using model eyes.
Dr Gray also continues to support the ARCH Virtual Hospital, operated by the Aotearoa Charity Hospital Trust, which provides free cataract surgery to eligible patients who do not meet public hospital treatment thresholds.
Looking ahead, Dr Gray expects stronger cooperation between optometrists and ophthalmologists through professional education, collaborative case discussions and improved access to specialist advice.
“The scalpel may initiate the change, but partnership sustains it,” Dr Gray wrote. “Our best outcomes are shared outcomes.”
With this newly launched service, Re:Vision Laser & Cataract aims to provide patients experiencing difficulties after cataract or laser surgery with access to specialist guidance while supporting better coordination of post-surgical care.
