Vulcan Energy and BASF Partner to Cut CO2 Emissions at Ludwigshafen

Vulcan Energy Resources Limited has announced a partnership with BASF to develop a renewable heat project aimed at reducing CO2 emissions at the world's largest integrated chemical complex in Ludwigshafen. This collaboration includes plans to explore the establishment of a commercial Lithium Extraction Plant at the BASF headquarters.

The project targets generating 2000–2500 GWh/a of heat through an integrated renewable heat and lithium brine operation, addressing a significant portion of BASF's heat requirements. Vulcan will oversee the project and maintain complete ownership of lithium production, supplying battery-grade lithium hydroxide for the European electric vehicle market.

The agreement comprises potential district heating solutions for nearby towns, involving collaborations with regional energy providers to foster sustainable, low-emission heating solutions. BASF will fund initial geothermal exploration, positioning itself as the primary heat offtaker should preliminary phases prove successful.
