Samarkand to Host Historic World Chess Olympiad

The historic city of Samarkand is set to host the 46th World Chess Olympiad from September 15 to 27, 2026. Located in Central Asia, this will be the first time Samarkand has hosted the renowned chess team tournament, which began in 1927. This edition will feature a record 398 teams, with 208 in the men's (Open) section and 190 in the women's section, surpassing the previous record held by Budapest in 2024.

Simultaneously, the city will hold the 3rd Chess Paralympiad, hosting 41 teams, marking a historic participation level. Alongside, the 97th FIDE Congress will occur, including the presidential election. The event signifies Uzbekistan's ability to manage significant international sporting gatherings.

The United States leads the men's section based on average team rating, with India and Uzbekistan following. Prominent Uzbek players include Nilufarkhon Imomkuziyeva and Khumoyun Begmurodov making their debut. Javokhir Sindarov and Nodirbek Abdusattorov stand among the top ten globally.
