Treebones Resort in Big Sur Marks 20th Anniversary as a Pioneer in Glamping and Eco-Tourism

Treebones Resort, nestled in the south of Big Sur, California, commemorates its 20th anniversary as an eco-friendly glamping site. The resort, known for offering guests a distinctive experience to connect with nature, features yurts poised along the Pacific Ocean, providing a serene getaway. Developed from a parcel of land coined "Treebones" in the early 1980s, John and Corinne Handy, alongside their children, transformed their vision into reality by 2004.

The Handys aimed to give visitors a luxurious yet simple camping experience, leading to the establishment of a place where one can enjoy nature in comfort. Despite the term ‘glamping’ not being in use at their start, they endeavored to describe the novel concept through their first brochure. Today, Treebones Resort not only continues to attract guests worldwide for its unique accommodations but also offers enhanced amenities including dining options, massage services, and daily yoga.

Emphasizing sustainability, Treebones operates off-grid, provides subsidized housing for employees, and shares eco-friendly practices with guests. To celebrate their two decades, the resort has planned a live music concert in October 2024, inviting both the public and Big Sur community. Despite challenges such as natural disasters and the pandemic, Treebones remains committed to promoting light-footprint tourism and navigating the complexities of their location along Highway 1.
