The participation of seniors in the labor market is stagnating in Switzerland

According to a study by Swiss Life, around a quarter of Swiss people work beyond the reference age. Nearly half of people aged 50 to 64 would be ready to do so, if health and working conditions allow it.

Between 2018 and 2022, 30% of 66-year-old men and 21% of 65-year-old women were employed. Most work part-time and about half are self-employed. Participation is higher in German-speaking Switzerland than in other regions.

Active seniors are often motivated by good health and employer esteem. On the other hand, financial aspects such as a better pension play a secondary role. Although the participation rate has stagnated in Switzerland, it continues to grow in other OECD countries.
