Thailand's Anti-corruption Drive Deserves Strong Domestic Focus, Avoids CPI Overemphasis
In a revealing interview, Mrs. Juree Vichit-Vadakan, Chairperson of Transparency Thailand Foundation, discussed strategies for tackling corruption in Thailand, emphasizing the necessity of reforming the justice system and modifying outdated regulations. The Transparency Thailand Foundation's head highlighted that boosting law enforcement efficiency and minimizing governmental discretion could effectively address corruption.
Juree expressed concerns over the undue emphasis placed on the Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), advising that more attention be focused on ground-level reforms rather than the fluctuating scores of international indexes. She pointed out that the CPI's methodologies might not fully reflect the Thai context, suggesting potential inaccuracies in its assessment.
Furthermore, she referenced significant progress made in curbing corruption through initiatives like the Integrity Pact and the Public Construction Transparency Project, which have reportedly saved over 100 billion baht. However, Juree notes ongoing challenges, including bureaucratic inefficiencies and the slow pace of legal proceedings, which could undermine anti-corruption efforts if not addressed.
Juree also underscored that comprehensive reform efforts and the active engagement of the Thai populace are crucial for fostering transparency and accountability. She concluded by expressing support for the National Anti-Corruption Commission's continued efforts in the fight against corruption in Thailand.
