Rivers Are Life Debuts "Gifts of the Nile" Documentary Focusing on Nile River Cleanup

On March 14, 2024, the environmental initiative Rivers Are Life released "Gifts of the Nile," a new film showcasing efforts to remove plastic pollution from the Nile River. Set on Qursaya Island, Cairo, the documentary follows River Hero Alban De Ménonville and his VeryNile team as they not only clean the river but also engage in community education and conservation awareness.

The film highlights the "Reviving Cairo Fishermen" project, which employs local fishermen for plastic removal, offering them a sustainable income while cleaning the river. It captures the daily life of artisan Loza Mahmoud, her husband Hamed Aly Hamed, a fisherman, and their children, illustrating their dependence on the Nile's resources. Facing diminished fish catches, the family has prioritized collecting river plastic, which is then processed into useful products by local workers.

Salma Ellakany, an educator affiliated with VeryNile, is featured for her role in teaching young people about environmental conservation. The documentary showcases how the project transforms plastic waste into textiles and goods, fostering community unity and sustainability. Alban De Ménonville remarks on the project's positive impact on local families and the river's health, bringing benefits to 140 local families directly.
