Red Coalition Inc. Files $1 Million Human Rights Complaint Against Québec Government Over Bill 96

The Red Coalition Inc. has lodged a formal complaint with the Commission des droits de la personne et des droits de la jeunesse (CDPDJ) against the Québec government. Their grievance addresses Bill 96, also known as "An Act Respecting French, the Official and Common Language of Québec," for its discriminatory effects on various communities.

Since its introduction on June 1st, 2022, Bill 96 has heightened tensions among Francophones, English speakers, and other linguistic groups in Québec. The Red Coalition underscores the psychological and social harm caused by the law, including increased hostility and mental health issues within communities.

The complaint also points to the economic risks posed by Bill 96, noting potential damage to trade relations with the United States. The Red Coalition seeks $1,000,000 in punitive damages to be distributed among advocates for linguistic and cultural equality. They urge the CDPDJ to investigate the broad impacts of Bill 96 to promote social cohesion and safeguard economic interests.
