Patients for Patient Safety US Awarded $100,000 for New Healthcare Initiative
The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI) has awarded Patients for Patient Safety US (PFPS US) a $100,000 Eugene Washington PCORI Engagement Award. The award supports the launch of "Project PIVOT," a patient-led initiative aimed at enhancing patient safety and healthcare equity through improved patient-centered outcome research tools.
Project PIVOT, short for "Patients Involved in deVeloping Outcomes Together," will focus on integrating patient-reported outcomes (PROs) and patient-reported experiences (PREs) into existing healthcare assessment frameworks. This initiative aims to capture firsthand experiences from patients and families to identify gaps in traditional healthcare evaluation metrics.
Sue Sheridan, co-founder of PFPS US, highlighted the project's commitment to learning from direct patient and family feedback, which will address patient safety, diagnostic quality, and bias. The project intends to conduct surveys to gather insights on safety and discrimination issues faced by patients, particularly in historically underserved communities.
The funding will also facilitate two key meetings to develop and advance survey methodologies that can accommodate diverse patient groups. These efforts are supported in part by additional funding from the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation and the John A. Hartford Foundation.
