CITES Confirms Compliance in Cambodian Macaque Breeding
On November 19, 2025, the CITES Standing Committee released an assessment highlighting Cambodia's macaque breeding practices. The committee recognized Cambodia's adherence to international standards, their transparency in customs and inspection procedures, and their commitment to aligning with CITES directives. The report was prepared following a thorough review relying heavily on scientific data.
Long-tailed macaques are vital in biomedical research, particularly in drug safety assessments. However, import reductions from Cambodia to the U.S., due to alleged illegal activities, have impacted research. The National Association for Biomedical Research welcomed the report's findings. NABR President Matthew R. Bailey expressed readiness to collaborate with Cambodia and other countries to address these challenges.
