MyRadar Releases Its First Annual Tropical Outlook Ahead of Atlantic Hurricane Season
MyRadar has published its initial tropical forecast of the year, predicting an exceptionally active Atlantic hurricane season. Beginning June 1, the season is expected to mirror the hyperactivity of 2020, which recorded 30 named storms, 14 hurricanes, and seven major hurricanes.
Dr. David Ryglicki, MyRadar’s tropical expert, highlighted the anticipated increase in Accumulated Cyclone Energy (ACE) by 62%, projecting it to surpass 200. This surge is attributed to the end of an El Niño phase and unusually warm Atlantic sea surface temperatures (SST), which are currently above normal early-season levels.
El Niño conditions suppress hurricane activity, while transitioning La Niña conditions tend to increase it. Dr. Ryglicki noted that El Niño is ending, and La Niña is expected by July, potentially fostering the development of long-track tropical storms during peak season.
To keep communities informed, MyRadar will host a series of webinars throughout the hurricane season, starting on June 26 at 12:00 p.m. EDT.
