Kapsch TrafficCom's GNSS Tolling System Shows Promise in Norway

Kapsch TrafficCom has successfully completed a Proof of Concept (PoC) for road user charging in Oslo, Norway, emphasizing the viability of GNSS-based tolling as a sustainable alternative to traditional fuel taxes. This initiative is crucial as fuel tax revenues are expected to diminish with the rise of electric vehicles, impacting funding for infrastructure. The PoC processed over 2 million kilometers of trips and achieved a 99.5% accuracy rate, demonstrating scalability for nationwide implementation.

The system combines GNSS technology and a smartphone-based application, proving efficient even in challenging environments like urban congestion, tunnels, and remote areas. Its cloud-based approach reduces CO₂ emissions by 85% compared to conventional systems. This aligns with global sustainability goals and offers a sustainable solution for maintaining infrastructure funding as countries transition to electric vehicles.
