Intertribal Timber Council Criticizes EU's EUDR Review

The Intertribal Timber Council (ITC) expressed disappointment over the European Commission's EUDR simplification review. The review offered no significant relief for Indigenous Tribal Nations. Concerns from Tribal forest managers remain unresolved despite their repeated communications highlighting potential negative impacts on Indigenous communities.

The Commission opted for limited adjustments, maintaining compliance obligations for Tribal Nations in low-risk countries. Cody Desautel, ITC President, criticized the unchanging policy for failing to recognize the distinctiveness of Indigenous forest stewardship and governance, affecting U.S. Tribal Nations managing 7.8 million hectares of sustainably governed forestland.

ITC warned the current EUDR framework is disrupting U.S. forest product supply chains as new compliance demands emerge. The organization urges the European Commission to simplify requirements for Indigenous forestry operations and engage in meaningful consultations with Tribal Nations.
