Chief Justice Kant Advocates Stronger ADR for India-UK FTA Success
On June 8, 2026, Chief Justice of India, Mr. Surya Kant, spoke at the ICA's International Conference in London. He emphasized strengthening Alternate Dispute Resolution (ADR) to support the India-UK Free Trade Agreement (FTA). The agreement, concluded last year, aims to boost bilateral trade by USD 34 billion annually.
Justice Kant highlighted the need for robust institutional arbitration to ensure procedural fairness. He remarked that a strong Indo-UK economic partnership requires more than trade agreements; it demands an ADR framework that fosters commercial trust.
He proposed a joint arbitrator accreditation program to enhance Indo-UK commercial collaborations. Furthermore, he recommended creating swift protocols for technology and fintech disputes. Justice Kant stressed connecting arbitration with mediation for better outcomes in long-term business relationships.
