Hapag-Lloyd Orders 24 New Container Ships

Hapag-Lloyd has announced a significant investment in modernizing its fleet with 24 new container ships. Contracts have been signed with two Chinese shipyards. Half of these vessels, each with a capacity of 16,800 TEU, will be built by Yangzijiang Shipbuilding Group, enhancing existing service capacities. The remaining 12 ships, ordered from New Times Shipbuilding Company Ltd, will replace older units. Each of these will hold 9,200 TEU.

These ships will feature cutting-edge dual-fuel engines, capable of reducing CO2 emissions by up to 95% with biomethane and are also ammonia-ready. Delivery is expected between 2027 and 2029. The total investment amounts to USD 4 billion, with USD 3 billion already secured in long-term financing. This move aligns with Hapag-Lloyd's Strategy 2030 to modernize and decarbonize its fleet, aiming for a 33% emissions reduction by 2030.
