GA-ASI Flies MQ-9B With Pratt & Whitney Canada's PT6 E-Series Engine
General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI) conducted a successful flight of its MQ-9B SkyGuardian® Remotely Piloted Aircraft on July 15, 2024. The aircraft was equipped with a PT6 E-Series turboprop engine supplied by Pratt & Whitney Canada. The 44-minute flight demonstrated impressive handling and acceleration. Representatives from both companies were present to witness the milestone.
"The PT6 engine on our MQ-9B is a significant step forward," said GA-ASI President David R. Alexander. He emphasized the benefits for customers, including lower sustainment costs and extensive global support facilities.
The PT6 E-Series engine is known for its reliability and versatility. It offers a 33 percent power increase over the current engine and utilizes a dual-channel Full Authority Digital Engine Controller.
The MQ-9B is GA-ASI's next-gen RPA with features like auto takeoff and landing under SATCOM-only control. It is currently in use or contracted by the UK, Belgium, Canada, Taiwan, and the U.S. Air Force for various missions. The Japan Coast Guard and JMSDF also use the MQ-9B for maritime operations.
