Flamanville EPR Connects to National Grid: First Electrons Generated
EDF announced the successful connection of the Flamanville EPR to the national electricity grid on December 21, 2024. The reactor has begun generating electricity, marking a significant milestone for EDF and the nuclear sector. The process commenced following the first nuclear reaction on September 3, 2024, and the reactor has produced an initial 100 MW of electricity.
Luc Rémont, Chairman and CEO of EDF, highlighted the event as historic for the nuclear industry, commending the dedication and focus on safety exhibited by the project teams. The Flamanville EPR joins existing reactors in China and Finland.
Testing and grid connectivity phases will continue under the ASN's supervision, with plans to achieve full power operation in the coming months. EDF estimates the reactor will produce approximately 14 TWh of electricity until the first maintenance shutdown.
