Study Reveals Rising Stroke Rates and Increasing Inequalities
A recent study presented at the European Stroke Organisation Conference 2026 highlights an increase in stroke incidences, especially among ethnic minority groups and socioeconomically disadvantaged communities. After years of decline, these rates are climbing, reflecting broader health disparities globally.
The 30-year study analyzed 333,000 residents of South London, identifying 7,726 stroke cases. It noted a 13% rise in stroke rates from 2020-2024, despite earlier declines. Stroke incidences were notably higher in Black African and Black Caribbean populations compared to White populations.
Factors contributing to these disparities include higher prevalence of high blood pressure and diabetes in minority groups. Additionally, these groups often face challenges in receiving timely medical care. The findings underscore the urgency for effective prevention and targeted healthcare interventions.
