ENGIE Expands Battery Storage Capacity to 500 MW Across Europe
ENGIE has reached a milestone with 500 MW of Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) capacity in Europe, encompassing projects that are either installed, under construction, or in development. This achievement includes the latest 100 MW BESS project in Kallo, part of Belgium's 4th Capacity Remuneration Mechanism auction results. The project involves a lithium-ion battery farm set to begin a 15-year capacity contract in 2028. Once operational, it will provide energy storage equivalent to the electricity consumption of over 48,000 households, aiding the transition from a former fossil fuel-powered site.
ENGIE's European portfolio now counts 17 BESS projects across six countries. This expansion aims to bolster the reliability and security of the continent's energy supply as renewable energy sources grow. The company, with a global operational battery capacity exceeding 2 GW, targets a 10 GW capacity worldwide by 2030 to support the energy transition.
