Compliance with CO2 targets must not hide political inaction

In 2023, Swiss automobile importers met CO2 targets. Average emissions from new passenger cars fell by 6.7% compared to 2022, reaching 112.7 grams of CO2/km, well below the target of 118 grams. Light commercial vehicles reached the target with 186 grams of CO2/km, a decrease of 7.7%.

The efforts of the Swiss automotive sector in electric mobility are notable, with a market share of 30.1% for electric and plug-in hybrid cars. However, auto-suisse warns that these successes risk stagnating without political action to support charging infrastructure and provide adequate incentives.

Demand for electric cars has stagnated since the start of 2024, partly due to problems with access to charging stations. SMEs are hesitant to adopt electric vehicles in times of economic uncertainty. A dense network of charging stations and attractive electricity tariffs are essential for sustainable growth of zero-emission vehicles.
