BioEnergy Development Inc. Expands Domestic Activated Carbon Production

BioEnergy Development Inc. (BDI) has unveiled a strategic investment from Opala Energy I LLC to finance a premium Activated Carbon (AC) production module in Columbia Falls, Montana. This initiative aims to mitigate the domestic supply deficit prompted by federal regulations mandating water treatment solutions utilizing AC. BDI plans to produce 3,000 dry tons annually from domestic wood waste and tree nut shells. The facility's AC grades, ID1000 and ID1200, are priced between $2,000 and $4,000 per ton.

The recent EPA mandate for PFAS compliance intensified the demand for AC, as it identified AC as a Best Available Technology, influencing water utilities nationwide. BDI's facility will be operated by Energy Junction 1 LLC, ensuring a sustainable and self-powered production process using the eXRGY BioReactor technology. This method promises to insulate the operation from energy price fluctuations, supporting stable long-term contracts.

BDI's strategy includes a scalable model with potential sites across the U.S., underscoring a revenue potential as the market for AC is expected to grow significantly in the coming years. The investment structure aligns with federal incentives under the Inflation Reduction Act, offering tax advantages such as the Investment Tax Credit and bonus depreciation.
