Switzerland and the electric vehicle tax: a brake on electric mobility?

The debate over electric vehicle taxation in Switzerland is intensifying. The Federal Council is considering a new tax to finance transport infrastructure. This initiative has been criticized by auto-schweiz, which believes it hampers electromobility and runs counter to climate targets. Currently, Swiss motorists pay more than the costs incurred, with a cost recovery rate of 156 percent, or nearly 13 billion francs per year.

Thomas Rücker, CEO of auto-schweiz, highlights three points: an additional tax penalizes households, discourages emission-free driving, and complicates climate targets. A study commissioned by auto-schweiz reveals that two-thirds of Swiss people consider transport costs to be excessive. Introducing a tax in 2030, when electric mobility accounts for less than 5% of the vehicle fleet, seems inappropriate, according to auto-schweiz.
